The Mother (premiered September 2025)
Inspired by Maxim Gorky’s iconic novel, this dance musical fuses gutsy live music, virtuosic choreography, and immersive theater to bring to life the struggles of working people during the Bolshevik Revolution — and to confront the forces of oppression and corporate greed that still reverberate today. An equal collaboration between Carl Flink of Black Label Movement and Luverne Seifert and Darcey Engen of Sod House Theater, THE MOTHER features an explosive, original punk score by Annie Enneking. Premiered at Sokol Hall in St. Paul in early September 2025.
“[The Mother] embraces the proletariat message of its source material with catchy tunes and inventive dance theater vocabulary…Choreography by Black Label's Carl Flink provides texture rather than dominance, underscoring the narrative with movement.” - Sheila Regan for the Minneapolis Star Tribune
"The Mother is a fusion of theater companies, artists, and art forms that really makes you feel the emotions of the story viscerally in a captivating 90 minutes…The story is beautifully and effectively told through a combination of thrilling dance numbers happening literally a few feet in front of you (keep your hands and feet inside the ride at all times)!" - Jill Schafer, Cherry and Spoon
